Easy canvas removal?

I have a carefree awning on my camper and the fabric that covers the canvas when the awning is rolled up has dry rotted and torn. I think I can take that part out and replace the fabric there since my canvas is still in very good condition outside of needing to be cleaned. Is there a way to remove the awning canvas from the roller without unrolling the spring? I would like to remove it and just have that upper 12" or so of grey coving fabric replaced. Any ideas?

Just drive it down the road like Robin Williams did in the movie RV he removed his in short order.
