cleaning the zip-dee awning

I have an original 1979 awning on my 28' trailer. We use it seldom due to high winds, but last time we had it out we noticed some black mold. Does anyone have suggestions for cleaning and then preventing recurrence? Thanks! Jenne

I had good luck with the 303 product linked here. Also try and open your awning a few times a year and let it dry completely. They hold moisture when closed, as you probably know. 303 also makes a protection product linked here, but I have not used it.

Go to any dollar store and try this stuff. It's cost effective and really knocks out all kinds of grime

Sorry gang, but that product is for whitewall tires. It will eventually EAT your Sunbrella acrylic fabric.

Zip-Dee recommends just soap and water. Perhaps a little Simple Green on the really tough spots. Whitewall tire cleaner WILL damage your awning!

Zip Dee also has a cleaner they sell. It can be purchased from Zip Dee I believe and also for sure off the Airstream Factory Store site.

I use a solution of bleach, dish detergent and water. Spray it on or brush it on with a long handled brush, let it sit for a few minutes, rinse well, and dry really well. You can even roll your awning up with the solution on it to let it sit if it's a dry day, so the awning stays wet. Wear OLD clothes you don't care about, though, because if you get it on your clothes, you'll have bleach spots. It'll get rid of the mold spots. Unfortunately, you may still have a shadow after it's all clean, depending on how long the mold has been sitting there.
