Carefree awning problems

We replaced the fabric on our Carefree awning, came with our '1978 Sovereign and since then, awning will not roll up. Possibly springs are bad, does anyone know a source for springs for a Carefree awning circa 1978? Also, do those springs roll up AWAY from the camper, in other words, front spring counter clockwise, rear spring clockwise? Must it be tensioned while it's up on the camper? We got the material for our awning from a local awning dealer, not Rv awning, sunbrella. I know, we should've just gotten a new ZipDee, but they are so expensive. Thanks!

Didn't you have at least one spring removed when you installed new fabric? Was it good? Wind the springs to a natural return. The specs say about one turn per foot of material.

Eastern South Dakota is very pretty with hills, rivers, and trees.

Yes, springs are in there, one is kinda twisted spiral style, the other has a piece of the wire popped out of it. We are still trying to make them semi work, since seems impossible to replace them. So, if you know which way to wind the tensions, and if they should be unrolled during tensioning or up on the AS. We've watched the you tube on zip dee and modern carefree, but nothing like this one.

my 1975 Carefree awning had arrows on the endcaps to show direction of winding.
I used a pipewrench on top of endplug to wind it, then had a friend with a deadblow
hammer to send it home. About 8 turns with awning retracted.

Carefree awning problems Reply to Thread

Thanks for all the replies and help to our awning question.

We were able to find two used but good condition springs, install correctly to include winding the correct direction. The new fabric now looks great opened. It now winds evenly with a small amount of help.

Thanks also to our friends at Colaw Used Awning Parts.

For future reference, you can still get all Carefree parts new, except for the curved arms.
