Carefree awning

Hey guys, I just picked up the parts for the original care-free awning for my 77 overlander.
It has both complete curved arms with brackets (the bolts were threaded back into the holes on the body)
Also got the top tube, but that's it. One end of the tube is open, no canvas at all. And the c-channel on the body of my airstream has a rip in it, so it needs replacing as well.

What should I do guys?

These are the two arms, they seem straight and in good shape. I can still read the sticker that says "care free awning"

You can buy new end with springs & cap but don't think they come with ears on cap as I couldn't find them for my care free plus orig. cap w/springs is probably rusted and bad, carefree used springs attached to end caps both ends, expensive plus new awning rail & canvas. Zipdee awnings the way to go.

Do zipdee's use curved arms?

I've been searching for a bit and recommendations to switch to a zipdee are everywhere. That's probably what I'll do. But then I would need to drill new holes for the mounting brackets.

Can I retrofit a zipdee onto my arms?

NO they are compleatly different, all differant mounts. Old holes can be filled w/olympic rivets bottom 2 lag bolts into edge of floor will eventually pull out w/carefree arms to fill holes remove rub rail insert fill holes with some caulk put new rub rail insert in readily av. reasonably priced [will cover caulk]

Zip Dee on curved arms?

NO! The Carefree arms will not work with a ZipDee awning roller. You may be able to buy the awning roller from a parted out trailer as well as the awning rail. I can refer you to someone who may be able to help you out. E-mail or pm me if you are interested. E-mail is: caredcarver@aol.com. Hope this helps, Ed

From Zipdee Awning. They, unlike Carefree, are very user friendly. They have a website.

Lots of RV dealerships carry Carefree of Colorado awnings and hardware. You might be able to locate the missing pieces by calling around. Also, if you look at their website, they have tons of different fabric options. Call around before you drop over a thousand bucks. Mine is holding up just fine.

It's been my experience Carefree dealers are not interested in selling parts for a 30+ year old awning. They would much rather pitch a new one to you. Also Carefree awning canopies are vinyl. Two of the reason I dumped Carefree and went Zipdee.

I'm a Carefree dealer and it's not so much that dealers don't want to sell parts for 30 tear old awnings........it's that Carefree does not support their older products, so the parts are just not out there. Parts are either scarce or non existent for 10 year old Carefree products!

As far as fabrics are concerned, any Carefree product is available with acrylic fabrics. Zip Dee only uses acrylic fabrics, but their target market is for higher end RVs.

parts

Zip Dee is definitely the way to go if you can., contact Andy at Inland Rv.. he will fix you right up. If you are selling the parts to yours, I sure need the short arms that go from the trailer to the curved arms. I can also find buyers for the rest of your stuff, should you decide to sell. I am stuck with mine, but experience is good. buy the zip dee. Richard in Texas
