Awning Troubles

We just recently bought a 1966 Caravel. The awning that came with it has freyed rope that you put into the metal sleeve. Are people keeping it that way with new rope or updating and sticking a metal rode inside? What do you do with the ends of the rope once it's been put on? Tie knots? Completely clueless and need your help. I have no instructions or a brand name on the poles. Thanks for any ideas.

Check with Vintage Trailer Supply - they have the poles available and can set you up with a sew on modern plactic replacement for the rope edge. Quick and easy repair. Look at their web page for examples.
