Thanks a bunch to all concerned in this discussion. I am about to launch for a planned trip and will definitely check the mechanism involved (noticed one of the two hooks rather loose last season) and will use something to secure the awning arms while in route.
I think I'd replace a lost hook unless experience convinced me the suggested alternative securing methods were adequate.
Thanks again.

Thanks every one for all the input. It's amazing how much more I learn here than from the dealer. I have a replacement hook on the way from zip dee, and will probably use one of the supplemental methods to secure as well.
One thing I'm still a bit unclear on are these "wheel clamps" people have mentioned. Are they on all zip dee awnings? Where are these?

Unroll the awning just enough. Too much and your arms are not long enough to hold the hook and philips screwdriver to tighten.

Try using a pair of vice grip pliers to free up one hand. Grip the hook lightly with the pliers amd then use some duct tape to secure the pliers in place on the awning shroud.
A stick through the latching hole of the hook taped to the shroud should also keep the hook from turning

I lost mine, used zip ties until got into the dealer, now always use zipties on trips, also continuously use velco wrap around arm braces as a standard practice. A poor design that should have been corrected years ago.

MNJeff, your awning has two "hooks" where mine had one, plus wheels, which also secures the awning to the trailer.
I lost my "hook" the last time out, and called Linda @ Zip Dee. She sent a replacement kit.
Yours is easy to get to. You'll need a ladder to replace the "hook".
Made sure you use the 3M Sealit(?) liquid included in the kit she sends. Coat the inside of the "hook" and threads of the bolt before you screw them together.
Make sure you've got the awning down, and you place the "hook" on the top and the screw underneath.
Good luck!

Mine, on the main awning came very loose and I was afraid of losing it (I only have one in each awning). I did just as others have said - tightened it and applied locktite and it has been fine ever since.
I always wondered how important it was as the wheel locks seem to do a good job - but some people have said the awning can still come unrolled with the wheel locks in place.
I would not have thought that, but I have never looked at things that closely - in any event having the security hook as well can only be a good thing.
I find sometimes when I go to engage mine with the awning rod, sometimes it doesn't line up that well and I have to fiddle with it a bit - I suppose just due to how the rolling rolls itself up.
Brian.

Linda @ Zip Dee said the roller locks are sufficient enough to keep the awning in the stowed position. She went on to say the "hook" was really redundant.
If the roller lock came undone, I would say it wasn't tightened enough.
JMHO, of course. ;-)

So after watching the you tube videos on the wheel locks, I am starting to think my Sport 22FB might not have them. Unfortunately, it's kept off site so I can't just go and take a look. The video I watched shows two wheel locks and one travel latch hook toward the rear of awning. Mine has two travel latch hooks, one on each end. Is it possible that not all zip dee awnings use the wheel locks? If they are there, I have a hard time believing I've never noticed them...
Any other Sport 22 owners have these wheel locks in addition to two hooks?

Awning retention hook gone, would you replace?
Our 1987 Avion has it's original Zip-Dee awning. It has what they call a Z-latch on the leading end of the tube, as well as the wheel clamps on both ends. The Z-latch is to be in the locked position when the awning is stowed, unlocked to deploy the awning. No travel latch(es).
I assume they changed this design sometime in the past? It sure works well.

So I just spoke with my new friend Linda at Zip Dee, who cleared up my confusion. Turns out the "Sport" models (both 16' & 22') do not have wheel locks on the awnings, just the travel latch hooks. She said the reason for this was that Airstream tasked Zip Dee to design an awning for the Sport that weighed 30% less than a similarly sized model. We also have our awnings on a 2.5" roller instead of the customary 3". This reduced weight is also supposed to make them easier to secure during transit, but I think I will still use a zip-tie or Velcro strap as added peace of mind.
Hopefully this will be helpful to other Sport owners if they watch the awning instructional videos and ask themselves "where in the hell are these wheel locks they're talking about?"

Jeff, I have a 2014 16' Bambi Sport and it only has the two travel hooks, no wheels. I think because the awning is smaller it was not needed. But after reading all the other replies I am going to secure the awning while traveling.

Both our Sport 16 and 22 came with loose hooks. Zip Dee said they send the awnings to Airstream with hooks unattached. Airstream should use Locktite but apparently doesn't, so it's up to us!
