Awning rail "snaps"

I'm in the middle of polishing the 58 Flying Cloud and I'm up to the awning rail. (A new awning is a future project). Question: above the rail, and screwed into the flange, are three, equally spaced twist-lock "snaps", like the ones I've seen on boat covers. What are they for?

Airstream did not ever install snaps as you have described.

Those snaps suggest some type of cover or awning that a previous owner installed.

Very likely an awning. My FC has one on each end that the awning attaches to. The middle one would also be for a strap, where mine has a strap sewn into the awning. This allows you to use a roll up awning without having to remove it. It works great but it is manual. It takes me about 5 minutes to set up my awning and the same to take it down. It stays on the trailer like any other awning and I roll the poles up inside of it.
