Automatic awnings

I am considering replacing the current Zip Dee awning on our '06 Classic SO.......has anyone had experience with the automatic one from Zip Dee or is it practical to be installed on an airstream.

Airstream is Zip-Dee's #1 customer, so if they make one, it should be able to be installed on an Airstream.

If installed as per Zip Dee's instructions, then the answer to your question is "absolutely not".

The bad news from Ziop Dee, is that they do not presently have an "automatic" awning for Airstream or Argosy tarilers or motorhome.

The GREAT news, is that they have had it in development for some time.

The update on that news, is they will be showing it at the fall RV show.

They also say that it will be available in January 2012.

Now for the great, great, great news, is that Zip Dee will also have a "KIT" that will allow everyone that wishes too, update their present Zip Dee awning, to the automatic type.

The cost, has not been established yet.

Just found this out today.

Stay tuned for updates as they happen, except for costs, that we cannot post.

Andy

OK...many thanks to you Andy!!!!!! we will anxiously await the introduction....I am sure there are dozens on here that are like us...part of the "baby boomers" that foresee deployment of the awning becoming an issue just as we retire and really have the time to enjoy our trailers.....we can all start saving for the day!!! please keep us all posted

Just placed a call to Zip Dee to follow up on this. The gentleman said they will likely not have it in production until March 2012. It will have a remote.

The primary purpose for calling is to see how the retro-fit will work - if the full length arms would be replaced with shorter arms (what would we do with those holes ?). Unfortunately...he didn't know yet.

A few years ago good friends bought a motorhome with two automatic awnings, one over the door which works with a switch inside the coach, and a long one over the patio area which works with a remote or an inside switch. Several of us were sitting around when Tom pushed the remote and out came the awning.

"WOW!", I thought, that's the hot setup.

Last year Tom was getting ready to hit the road, he pushed the button inside to retract the over the door awning, and it did not retract. An hour later, with one person pushing the button and another on a ladder pushing the awning, it retracted. Seems that a nylon gear inside the mechanism had partially stripped. Tom is a cracker jack machinist, and when he got home, made a new, metal gear.

That was another "WOW" moment.

I think I'll be happy with what I have.

I called Zip Dee back in March and was told to check back mid-May. Just peeped at their website and noticed this...

What's New at Zip Dee
