Attaching a sun shade

I didn't know where to put this post, so I hope this location is OK.

We have decided to add a sun shade to the outside edges of our awning. I got the shade material and am considering attaching it with marine type snaps installed on that little flap of material that hangs down at the leading edge when the awning is fully extended.

But I'm wondering if that will add too much bulk when I roll the awning back up? I'd only do it on that front edge flap and would put the snaps every 4 to 6 inches. The other option would be some "mitten" clip kind of things that can clip to the fabric but be totally removed.

I know snaps would add too much on the sides so I'll do something else there. For the sides I might make loops that go over the awning arms and snap on to the shade itself.

So what do you think - would those snaps add too much bulk when rolling the awning back up?

I have the Zip Dee version. It has about 5 snaps on the 10' version.
They say its fine to roll up as long as you are not moving as the top clips wont close with the sunscreen rolled up with the awning.

Clarification

Let me make one clarification - I wasn't planning to roll it up with the sun shade inside - just the snaps. I would remove the shade before rolling it up. The fabric I got is too heavy to roll up, plus there will be snaps on the sides of it. I'm designing a 3 sided shade, and we will be able to use 1, 2 or 3 sides at a time.

But those snaps would be permanently installed and I was wondering if they would be a problem.

ZipDee installs male snap buttons on the roller tube. You then snap the screen to it when you want. Look on their website for clarification.

Attaching snaps

I was going to attach the snaps to the little fabric flap that hangs down, but the more I think about it the better it sounds to attach them to the roller itself. That would not risk ripping the fabric. I have the rivets to do this and it would probably even be easier.

Thanks!

We are considering purchase of a Zip Dee Solar Shade as a privacy screen. How effective do you think it will be in our permanent camp site?

Hi Sallye, just a suggestion on the rivets. I asked for a few extra and spaced them along the full length of the roller. This gives me a little flexibility to move it anywhere along the length. To be honest, we find very little need for it but at those times where you need it, YOU NEED IT. So I'm not sorry that I have it.
