Probably a bit of both, Jeremy. My 1993 Foretravel has a Zip-Dee awning very similar to the ones used on Airstreams, which means that the arms on the ends form a triangle. Those cantilever awnings have no support other than the pair of folding arms, so there is nothing to hold the awning down in a gust of wind.
You might be able to put a couple of ground anchors in and run a rope to the ends to help with a sudden gust. Best practice is to take the awning in whenever you aren't actually there to jump up and bring it in.
The other thing I don't like is that they are all electronic. If the motor decides to quit while the awning is extended good luck in getting it stowed. With the Zip-Dee, I AM the motor, and if I die anyone can stow the awning.
