21" zipdee won't loosen to unroll

Any hints on how to get this to pop out would be greatly appreciated. I took it to the local dealer for all my repairs, including new zipdee parts.

Brad and Julie tried to show me how to use it this weekend and Brad couldn't get it to release.

Did it work before and is now not opening for you? Did you release the wheel shaped catches or Z lock? Did you try to pull out the fabric pull strap?

It did not work before. It did work after the awning repair at the zipdee dealer, although I did not see it in the open state. They are good guys and I trust them. I just don't know what I am doing and Brad and Julie do and they couldn't get it open.

Shoot! No travel lock in sight. I'm off to the zipdee dealer in the morning I guess.

On our 86 motor home the travel lock is in a different place than that video. We have only the large curbside awning.

The lock is located at the nose end of the motor home. If you get up on a ladder and look at the right end, you will see a little hook shaped like a bent finger. That is the lock. There is an eye (as I remember) that you can insert the awning stick through to pull and unlatch. Then you can rotate the wheels and pull out the awning. Hope this helps.

I'll just bet there is a travel lock up towards the front as that is where this awning seemed to be bound up when I tried to unroll it. Good luck Karen, I'll be surprised if it isn't there.

I will get out there this morning and take a look. I also bought some of the supplies you suggested at Camping World on Monday. Still looking for a few others, like the multi-prong jack you showed me.

Are you referring to the 15-to-30 amp and the 30-to-15 amp adapters? If you refer to them as a multi-prong jack, they'll not know what you're talking about. Any reputable RV supply place should have these in stock. Good luck and let us know on your awning.

I have those both now. It was the single plug in on one end and the multi-plug in on the other end. It was that big yellow thing.

What year is your rig?

Some ZipDee have a clutch lock at the forward end of the awing. This clutch lock is operated by what looks like a trigger folded in against the awing barrel. To release it you put your pull pole in the hole at the upper end of the trigger and pull it out about 20 degrees. Once released the awing should unroll by pulling on the pull strap.

These clutches do brake from time to time. If so you have to remove the forward end of the awing and replace the clutch. This is a simple task but I will not go into it until we decide if you have that type awing.

It's a 1987 345. It was just restored by the local zipdee dealer. I will probably head over there Friday morning for them to have a look see. I'm not tall enough without a really tall ladder.

The clutches that Howie refers to are called Z-locks. There are usually 2 one on each end of the roller. The rear one locks the spring and the front locks the roller tube.

THIS was the answer! It opened very quickly at the mechanic's once he unlocked the travel lock at the front.
