1965 Caravel Awning

I am working on my Caravel and see that it has what appears to be a track for an awning. Would a pole awning be the awning that would be original? I want to keep it original, but am unsure what would be appropriate. The manual shows no awning. Is there a source for such an awning? Anyone make one of these and have plans?

Thanks,
Rob

Good question, Robbie! I'm interested too!

My guess is that we'd need a bent, same length track that would hook over our awning track over the door. That removable track would be somehow permanently attached to the awning material, on the other end of which would be two grommets which would sit on the stakes, embedded in poles.

At least, that's what I've been imagining when thinking about how to get a awning on there. Now what's the real answer from an educated person!?

My 68 Caravel has an original awning. The fabric slides into the rail over the door and window. It has two gromets in the extended corners and one in the middle for poles. The PO made up an aluminum pieces for between the poles. You then tie it out like you would a cabin tent.

Vintage Awnings...

Here's an earlier thread with lots of links & pictures...

I have decided to make one....with scallops & fringe. I have selected the fabric, just need to get it ordered in the next couple of days, I hope to have it done in the next couple of weeks. I'll post pix when done...

Fabric

How does the fabric slide into the rail? I imagine it is like my covers for my tires, rope in fabric that fits into the rail and can not pull out.

Rob, I think you've got it right. I looked at a lot of pole awnings at the vintage rally a couple weeks ago. There were all shapes and sizes, but when the wind started to pick up the only thing that seemed to be important was having the poles securely tied to stakes in the ground People had awnings with all sorts of cross bracing and stuff, but if they weren't tied down good they were on the move!

Psychpw, could you measure the size of your awning? I'm ready to make one for mine as well, and I'm trying to decide how far out it should go from the trailer. I'll be sewing it up myself. I need all the help I can get!

Measurements

I, too, would be interested in the measurements, as I will have one made too. What is the best material to make one out of? Thanks all!

It will be weekend til I can measure. The piece that goes into the rail has a plastic tube in it not a rope. I think this gives it more stiffness so it can be pushed as well as pulled at the same time.
The material seems to be a vinyl coated canvas. Rather stiff. Ours is brown and white.

I plan on using the 100% acrylic Sunbrella Awning Canvas. It's the same fabric ZipDee awnings are made from.
