Stripping and polishing the 67 Globe Trotter

We just began stripping and polishing the Globe Trotter. What a filthy job! The gel stripper we bought at a big box store is not working very well, so we ordered the aircraft stripper from VTS. It should arrive today. My husband is doing the first pass of polishing as we get the panels stripped. We just couldn't wait to see it shine! While we were at the truck supply store getting polishing supplies a gentleman gave us his card. He polishes the chrome on big rigs. We gave him a call last night and he came over and looked at the Airstream. He gave us a VERY reasonable quote for polishing the trailer after we remove all the clear coat. They are coming over Monday and Tuesday to do the job! I will be watching very carefully to make sure there is no damage. I am a bit leary because the price was so reasonable......a fraction of what I have read about here. If the job is satisfactory, I will give his information to anybody in the Denver area that wants it.

This is how she looks after about 10 hours of work:

I will definately keep you posted! The aircraft stripper arrived today at 3:00 pm...we just got finished rinsing it off! 3 hours and it is done! That stuff is amazing! The pictures make the airstream look a lot shinier that it was....so there is still a lot left to do. Since we got the clear coat off so fast, the polishing guys will be here tomorrow at 6:00 am!

I will give a report tomorrow afternoon!

So is the shine just from the stripper, or was it the first cut your hubby did?

First cut of polish, but I don't think we'd done a great job of stripping with the gel stripper. It looked great from a distance, though!

The polisher arrived this morning and has been hitting it hard since about 8:00 a.m. It looks fantastic! He is doing the bottom half today and the top tomorrow. It is really interesting to see a professional do it. There is an art to it, that's for sure. I will post finished pics tomorrow!

Well, we are done with the polishing. We still need to do the final extra fine pass. We have some additional work to do (paint the roof with elastomeric paint, some lighting issues), so we opted to wait for the final polishing pass until we got those things taken care of. It looks great and are you ready for it.......? $800. It took him 2 1/2 days. We are REALLY happy with it. He will come back when we are ready and do the final stage of polish for $300. If anybody in the Denver area is interested in his contact information, pm me and I'll get it to you.

So, guess how lucky we were today??? We went to HD to get the elastomeric paint. There was one 5 gallon pail of the stuff we wanted on the shelf, but no price. We asked about it, they checked their computers and it was priced at .01. ONE PENNY. The manager wasn't sure why it was priced that way, but he honored it. It was a product that they are no longer carrying, and the regular price was $125.00!!!!! WOOOOO HOOOOOOO!
