Spot Stripping End Caps Saving Coating on Remainder

Although I will likely haul the trailer up the road to Hanover, PA. and have 1st Impressions strip and polish it (see Frank's Blog Posting... Frank's Trailer Works Blog: Another 10 at 5 ) but, I may take a shot at the end caps in the time being.

Most of my trailer is still in pretty good shape, but the end caps bug me every time I look at them. I thought about perhaps going "two tone" for a while (strip the end caps, leave the rest intact). My main question is: how hard is it to spot strip, in particular, can you remove the stripper without water, thereby hopefully not stripping the area below the end caps? Can you wipe it off with paper or disposable towels?

FYI: One of my problems is that I live in a downtown "urban" area /historic district. I am lucky that I have a nice big area behind my house that I rent for parking the AS etc., however I think the folks would frown on me washing stripper off on to their property, biodegradable or not. The area that I park on is gravel so it is not like I can sweep it up.

Another question, when you strip/polish the end caps, do you remove the "Airstream" decals or do you work around them. It would seem that it would be easier to remove them and then replace them (if one desires, and I think I would) with new ones.

I spot stripped my Sovereign (roof). I masked the top of the window with blue tape and newspaper, then I taped drop cloths (old sheets) to the newspaper to prevent the stripper or the residue clearcoat etc from falling on the sides of the AS. This allowed me to strip the roof where the clearcoat was here and there peeling. I must say as a temp fix, it came out not half bad. There is obviously a line that shows were the tape was but much better than the patchy clearcoat. Just be creative and you can accomplish a lot with a littler. Good luck!!

WHY?
If your going to take it in for a strip/polish in a few weeks....why are you even thinking of this end cap deal. All I see is a mess, complicating the coming polish job...plus, if you have never used strippers .....it takes a lot of prep and cautions.

Melody, thanks but I likely won't get it stripped until next year (if I keep my job!). Gotta save up some bucks. In the meantime, I just wanted to get some of the splotchy areas looking a bit better in the meantime. Heck you should know that guys are not rational about this stuff (well maybe 2airishuman is ).

Airdreamer, did you rinse or wipe off the stripper?

I think if you are going to strip it, you should just do the whole thing at once. I think however 1999 is not Alclad aluminum. That might make polishing an issue.
