satin vs gloss finish

Am I the only one that doesn't want a high gloss finish? On our 1965 Globetrotter I would like a clean satin finish with a coating to protect the aluminium. Would the process be the same just stop with a coarse buffing compound before the finish?

If you did that, you'd probably end up with swirl marks in the aluminum.

satin vs gloss finish

It almost sounds to me like you may be describing something similar to the original factory sheen finish. When I had my '64 Overlander refinished, I asked for the lower sheen original-style finish on the aluminum -- I can't tell you how it was achieved, but the Ruths at P & S Trailer Service in Helena, OH provided exactly what I wanted. A photo of my Overlander is below:

I didn't want the mirror shine as this is how I remembered the Overlander from my first camping trip in 1964 when it was new.

I'd be interested in learning how this finish is achieved.

a natural look

If you strip the entire Airstream,,,well. Then use aluminum brightener, agitated with a very light 3M pad. Seal it up and put on an original Airstream clearcoat. Result will be a beautiful natural looking item.

"Aluminum Brighteners" are an acid wash. Acid etches metal and can cause problems if not neutralized quickly and completely. If you choose this method be very careful so you don't cause damage to these vulernable areas; rivits, panel seems, and window glass.

I've seen trailers that were both soda blasted and walnut shell blasted. Both were very nice alternatives to the mirror polished look. I believe the walnut shell finish was done by P & S...but I'm not sure.
