Polishing for dummies

Have never used a polisher, so please forgive basic questions. Bought a varible speed polisher and am using a wool bonnet. Learned quickly to spread polishing mixture into pad. Was surprised at how far the mixture will fly. Questions: What speed do you polish? How big of an area? How much pressure do you put on the polisher? When do you stop polishing? What area of the polisher do you use? (i.e. edge vs center)
Trial and error has taught me to stop when the polish makes black swirls and is still "wet". Then remove the blackened polish with a soft towel. When I tried to keep polishing, I got these hard black streaks and was afraid I was adding scratches. Have been using a dog's comb to keep the bonnet free from build-ups.
Have read these forums for hours, but guess I missed these basic questions. Any help or directions appreciated. Thanks. Jack

I am polishing a 63 Safari, have used Nuvite f9 with compounder, if its wet your using too much! use less polish till polish is gone! I then went over with a cyclo polisher and F7. First brings up mirror finish, second takes out swirl marks. I am starting today with cyclo and S polish. I previosly polished two 78 airstreams, each one differant results! Gpo to perfect polish website for pictures and instructions. I used what I had left over from previous polish, prefer g for initial compounding.
There are a lot of opinions on this subject, I've tried a lot of differant polishs and nuvite works best for me!
