Just wondering...if I took the Land Yacht to someone to polish it, what it would it run, costwise? I'm talking about an older trailer that may need (will need) to be "polished" in the more abrasive sense, prior to the Airstream polishing that I read about...no dings to work out, etc....
AIR #0078
'01 2500hd ext. cab, 8.1 litre gas, 5 sp. Allison auto
3.73 rear end
Mag-Hytec rear diff cover
Amsoil Dual by-pass oil filtration system
Amsoil synthetics all around
265 watt AM Solar, Inc. system
It's worse than that. There are up charges for removing awnings, marker lights, license plates, etc. maybe extra for extra bad oxidation spots. The actual price reported by someone who had it done was $130 per foot -- rear bumper to ball coupler. That's why I'm polishing my Tradewind myself.
Jim, You're so close to being on target for the cost.
I was quoted $100 per foot plus, $40 per hour labor for the removal of awnings, etc.
The sad part of it was...My cost was higher,
to me, as it was a wasted trip for that project!!
I live in the NE and, towed my unit all the way to OK., only to be told once I got there that, the work couldn't be done as we'd prearranged it(literally months ahead of time). To say I WAS disapponited is an understatement. I resolved to make the best of the trip and, not let it ruin my time with the A/S..
I've done alot of work myself since..It'll take me longer, may not look like the "professional" but, at least we're bonded..I've learned more abt what's what with my A/S and, have enjoyed it as well~!
ciao
Towner, that's outrageous. Why couldn't the work be done (if you don't mind me asking)? This is the first "bad" report I've had on those folks who generally seem to get high marks from Airstreamers. Man, I'd have my panties in a real wad if I had made the trip for "nothing" although I can appreciate that you made the best of a bad situation. I know quite a bit about my Tradewind having literally taken it apart and put it back together.
P.S. What happened to the spell checker function on here? I need it. What am I doing wrong?
The guy I used in OK is doing a great job. He is booked up and currently understaffed so completion dates are not what you might expect. I had to snatch it away from him, to get some other things done on the left coast, before he could finish painting the stripes, window frames, etc. It will be going back in October to finish up details.
Dick,
I, for one, think he's done a great job for you.
It still doesn't change anything about what happened in my case. I will say this abt the man and, his company.
when we arrived in Ok, it was a Sunday, the day before our scheduled date for the work to start. I camped out at the local KOA, just around the corner from..I'm sure you must know where I'm talking abt..<smile>The unit was ready for his crew.
He said that, he had employee problems, (one was in the hospital and, another was on vacation, etc.) and, wouldn't be able to start the work until he found out more on just what his employee's situation was, maybe tomorrow. It wasn't until Wen that it finally became apparant that this polishing project wasn't going to happen during the time we'd scheduled. I was on a somewhat tight schedule, expected to be in Va Beach, Va., the following weekend for a 40th class reunion. This was one of the reason's all of this had been scheduled months ahead. I had talked with him on the fone numerous times, emails etc..My arrival there wasn't an unexpected thing. Anyway, it all boiled down to this: He said, "I could leave my unit there with him".( I was told all about his problems with people breaking into his place of business and, stealing awnings, wheels, propane tanks off of units in the past that he had there for polishing). He said, "He would see to it that , if I left my unit with him, that it would be moved out to his place in the country as soon as possible and, the work would be done there". I asked, what was his honest est. on when this work would be done. The answer that I received was, in about a month time. I told him that wasn't acceptable as I had a reunion to go to and, this was what I had planned to stay in while at the reunion, plus this was my first year on a extended vacation with the A/S. He even said that, if I left it with him, that they would drive it half way across the country to meet me, instead of my having to drive all the way to OK again. That would've been nice except for the reasons mention above and, I wouldn't have any vacation time off from work at this time.(whenever that would've been). I asked him, if he was still planning on coming to NE that fall for the polishing trip he'd mention. Yes, he was..I said well, why don't we do it then. I thought we had it worked out, talked abt the local airport hanger where he could work without worrying abt the weather etc..He was sorry that the trip was wasted for me, in that I had put out so much expense getting there and, wanted to make it up for me. He siad that his wife did leather work and, that if I liked..maybe she could do some interior work for us to make up for the lost time, expense..etc. That sounded fine and, we left it at that.
WELL, FALL CAME AND, HE NEVER CALLED ONCE. NEVER SHOWED UP AND, AT THIS POINT, I'M DOING WHAT I CAN TO TRY AND POLISH IT.
You were lucky, is all I can say, to have hit it when you did.
I'll be the first to say, it looks GREAT!~! Wished that he'd been able to have done mine. (For instances, money was no object, as I had put $8,000 in my checking account to cover ALL expenses that might've occured).
I was there at his place the day before that we'd agreed months previously, I had the money to pay for the work and, ended up not once but, twice disappointed in the man's words~!~
It's not his work that I have a problem with but, His words~!
Everything I've written here is as good as if I'd given it under oath. I stand by every word as being fair to him and, correct~!
Let me be clear on one thing, I have no interest in hurting him nor his business as we all know that he has done fantastic work.
ciao
