oxidation anyone?

hi guys, i searched the forum but i'm still at a loss. my airstream has been by the sea of cortez for a year and it looks like hell. anything that could oxidize did. i'd like to clean it up before - or soon after - i head to the states, in like 3 weeks. i'm mostly concerned with my propane canisters, the little door flap over the outside electrical outlet...well, i guess i'm concerned about un-oxidizing anything that can oxidize.

could someone give me step-by-step instructions? i'm a total idiot when it comes to this stuff. (if i need to use a product i can't get here, i'll do it when i get 'home').

thanks a lot!

Better description...

Is it the whole skin thats corroded? Is it just those little items you mentioned? Is it the clear coat that "wore" off in the sun/sea air?
A light muriatic acid followed by a very good washing rinse will remove all the corrosion. If its the clear coat....your in for a strip....I like Remove all but aircraft paint stripper does a better job, faster....with lots of cautions involved....more masking involved too. Got pictures?..? That would help.

A light muriatic acid ...
... should not be used. All the crusty seams that don't leak certainly will once hit with acid wash.

thanks for your quick response.

well, my poor tradewind has a myriad of physical problems. and, yes, she suffers from airstream pattern baldness. that is a problem to be tackled another time. i'm more concerned with the oxidation of the little pieces; like the electrical cover is so corroded that it sticks closed. and ditto all the knobs on and around the propane cylinders.

i have muriatic acid - i use it to clean shells - and i put a tiny bit on a rag and wiped it on the electrical outlet cover and nothing happened. i was thinking of trying it on the propane knobs. i also thought about products like CLR of which i don't think i can get here.

i will take photos. i think that would help with my lack of adequate words because i think i'm possibly describing different problems. but i think i'll go have a margarita first and save the picture-taking for manana

This is my first time here, I just purchased a 1970 airstream, and need to know what is a good cleaner for exterior, and where can I find a manual on it?

Removing heavy oxidation on 1960 Overlander roof

There's a product called Aluma Prep... It's acid, so may get into seams and affect rivets.. But they use it on airplanes, so how bad can it be?
