Ocean Salt Exposure

Spent an extra long Memorial Day weekend camped on the Atlantic just north of Flagler Beach, Fla. Nice camp site right up against the beach. Within a day or two our AS and TV were covered with a fine layer of salty sand. It rained a bit, and soon exposed areas of steel on the hitch formed rust spots.
I wasn't worried about the TT shell, but, the trim, the brakes and other metal areas concerned me.
Upon checking out we drove straight to a you-do-it RV wash. Sprayed the whole unit including top and bottom. After getting home I bathed the AS again by hand.
I think we'll skip beach camping in the future. Too worried about corrosion in those out of the way and under surface regions that you just can't wax.

Camping on the Gulf is better in that respect. You don't get the big waves, but you also don't get all the salt spray from them, either.

If I had a spiffy new Airstream, I'd probably avoid the sea myself. I spent a year on isolated duty on a flyspeck Pacific island where nothing was more than 300 yards from salt water. Metal just melted away despite our constant scraping, priming, painting.

Having a 22 year old trailer gives you the latitude to "ocean up" a mite as a good wash down and an end of season session with the POR-15 pretty much pays the piper.

You did all you could do; lots and lots of fresh water...

Wendover, Nevada SALT

I crossed the salt flats of Utah and parked the truck and AS at a Casino parking lot in West Wendover. Seeing cars, trucks and trailers parked on the salt flats on the way into Wendover, looked interesting as we drove into town. After playing some Craps and having dinner at the Casino I noticed something sparkling on many vehicles parked in the lot overnight. SALT crystals coving the exteriors like they were crystallized. The tires were covered with salt, the mud flaps, the windows, frame...

I had driven across the salt flats from Salt Lake City to West Wendover on Interstate 80 and there was a fine white powder on my truck and mud flaps, the Airstream hitch and frame... salt. I understand how salt is bad for metal and anyone who makes this drive on I-80 needs to wash their tow vehicle and trailer once you are away from the area.

Boondocking in the Casino parking lot was also an interesting experience. The parking lot lighting was brighter than the SUN, and it cooled down to something in the upper 80's that evening. If I had to come up with an idea of Hell on Earth, this was close to it... Salt and heat was it.
