Nuvite, How Much
Just got my order of nuvite, one pound and removal one gallon. How far can I get with it? Grade is F7 but it doesn't look like much to me. How far wil the removal go. I will also be using a porter cable model polisher, any thoughts on that.
thanks
James

I didn't make it with one pound. However, when I first started, I wasted alot of it by using too much. You just need a little dab every 6 inches or so & you make about a 2 foot by 2 foot section at a time. I found that first you go quickly over the section that you're doing to smear the Nuvite over it thinly, and then you go over it slowly to get down to the shine. Good luck & make sure you wear short sleeves this summer. Your guns will never look better!

wow - a pound should really do it unless its really badly oxidized - less is better when polishing these things - less Nuvite and less speed on the polisher.

Thanks
I will post my progress, I am so excited to get started it just doesn't seem like near enough. My 82 year old mom volunteered to sew the new curtains for me too.

Polishing?
I stripped the plasticoat off the front curb panel. It came right of with a gentle hosing after setting for an hour. Proceeded to polishing, I have a Porter Cable 7424 model orbital polisher. I put on a wool bonnet and put a dab of F7 on. I smeared the polish slowly and started to polish. My problem seems to be that when I apply pressure it does not spin sufficiently and when a back off on pressure it spins but not enough pressure to polish. I tried going slow at about the 3rd setting and then up to about 6, it never heated the skin at all. It does look better and semi polished but I was hoping for better results. I am not sure if its the technique or do I need a heavier grade. I feel that I need a different polisher altogether as I am not getting a good spinning with this one? Any help is appreciated.

jsflint,
If I read correctly you are putting the Nuvite on the bonnet. Try putting the polish directly on the aluminum, a fingerprint amount every 3-6 inches, then try buffing. Only try a small area at a time, say 1-2 sq. feet. It will be trial and errror until you figure out exactly how much to use. If oxidation is excessive you may have to go over the same area more than once.
Hope this helps.

We used a Milwaukee #5460 Dial Speed Control Polisher for compounding, it worked great.
You still need several passes to get at all the oxidation...
I believe what you are using is more like a single headed Cyclo Polisher - I don't think it's going to do the trick for the deep-seated oxidation. Try a buff on a drill or the Milwaulkee polisher - they have more tooth.
The Porter Cable that you have may work for the later stages, for getting rid of some of the swirls.

Yes, InsideOut is correct....the orbital will not cut the oxidation like a rotary. You will be polishing for a long, long time with it.
I don't know if it is any good, but Harbor Freight advertises a variable rotary buffer/polisher for under $50. I bought an off brand locally for under a $100 and it works very well.

The info above is all right on target.
One further tip that worked for me: After you dab on the compound using your fingertip, use the polishing pad to smear the polish around a bit before you turn it on. This helped prevent slinging polish off by knocking down any small globs that tend to fly away.
I used the Harbor Freight circular polisher with good result ($39) and used a cyclo on the final polish.
Here are 3 sites to check some other's experiences and suggestions.

What a difference the right tool makes!
Hi All
Could not wait to get home this afternoon and test again, I can't tell you what a difference the right tool makes so I will show yall. Here is a couple of pictures after about fifteen minutes of polishing. It is hard on the hands but like someone else posted, very addicting. Thanks for all the replies as now I am getting the results I was hoping for.

I am using a borrowed black & decker 6138 7 inch sander/polisher with the polishing bonnet. Speed can vary from 0 - 3000. I'm polishing as instructed from previous posts with very low (manual) speed and very little polish. Just sorry I did get the weekend to polish.

I have been trying to polish mine also. How do i know if there is a clear coat on it and how do i get it off if there is? I bought a pound of nuvite c and s. Also, earlier someone mentioned using a drill? Does that mean that i can just get a buffing attachment for my cordless drill? Any help is appreciated

Check out VTS's site and read up on the polishing instructions- I found them very helpful.
On my '68 the clearcoat was mostly intact around the mid to lower panels- but gone on the top. I used various strippers to remove it and many plastic scrapers.
Here's a link to my thread- where I've recently started. Check out VTS though!

I wouldn't bother with a drill attatchment- and definately not a cordless. You'll need more power and the bigger surface area on a 7" polisher (even from Harbor Freight) will be well worth the purchase of a new tool!!

Nice BEFORE photo, Insideout! I have the exact Milwaukee buffer but after two trailers, it's BLACK, not red. An excellent tool even though it's heavy. Everyone is right about using as little polishing compound a possible. And use wool pads. Don't get talked into foam pads - they soak up way too much compound and don't hold up as well. I've washed and reused my wool pads several times and they still work well. For the final pass of "S" grade, I use a square pad sander and T-shirt material. Seems to take out the swirls left by the big buffer. Darol

Take a dab of polish and put it on a towel. Rub it hard with your finger against the trailer for about 10 or 20 seconds. Then look at the towel. It it turned black, you don't have clearcoat.
Usually folks use a 1/2" chuck plug in type drill. This work would burn through cordless batteries long before you do .

How much again??
Well I have been polishing for the last couple of weeks when I can and It seems to be really difficult. Not that I didn't think it would but I think maybe I should be using a coarser grade. Using F7 now but it is taking 3 passes over the same small 2'x2' area to get a shine and I don't mean a mirror either. I have used about 1/3 of the one pound can of nuvite. Any input is appreciated.
