How much shine?

Hello, we are new to Airstreaming as we just picked up our 79 Excella 500 (31ft.) a couple of weeks ago and have now finished checking out all systems. It is in very good and original condition except for the exterior. The clear coat has begun to deterioriate and the finish is balding in some areas.
We have decided to have the exterior stripped and polished and are wondering the pros and cons of a high mirror like finish as opposed to a softer factory like finish (as on new airstreams). And, since our trailer is so original, we don't want to diminish it's originality. So, the questions are---1. Are there disadvantages to having a mirror finish?
2. Will a high mirror finish detract from the original condition of the airstream?
Thanks in advance.

How much shine?

Greetings bcc!

Welcome to the Forums and the world of Vintage Airstream ownership!

The question of what sheen level to pursue is up to the individual owner. Most enthusiasts prefer the highest degree of sheen . . . but when Plasticoat is added there will be some reduction in the level of sheen.

When I had the Ruths at P & S Trailer Service polish and recoat my '64 Overlander, I specifically asked for original sheen. For me, it allowed me to relive the days when I went on my first camping trip with my coach's original owners in 1964. The Plasticoat has held up well and will soon be 10 years old. There is some degradation of the coat on the front and rear domes where the sun and towing have taken their toll . . . will probably be going back to the Ruth's for a partial recoat in a couple of years.

Good luck with your investigation!
