How do I know if my trailer has clearcoat on it?

I bought my 1962 trailer a year ago and want to polish it up - it's not looking too bad but I'd like to keep it shiny. Can you tell me how I tell if it has a clear coat on it? I wouldn't know how to spot the difference and intend working on it with a cyclo and polish on Sunday and don't know if I should be stripping something off first.

Put a little tooth paste on your finger and rub it on the skin. If your finger turns black from the aluminum oxide, the clear coat is gone.
