Exterior Cleaning

Hi. I'm a new airstream owner. Just got a 1974 31' Excella 500. Now I am trying to get it into shape. Have just finished removing the vistaview windows, resealing, and replacing them.

Now on to the exterior. I've noticed other posts talking about recaulking the seams. Is this really necessary? It wouldn't appear that you could get enough caulk into the seams to be effective. Tell me more.

Biggie problem is how the exterior skin looks. Can't do a real polish job at this time. Soap and water don't seem to do anything for the streaks. Is there any kind of cleaner, car wax, etc. that will help the looks but not harm the skin?
