I don't know the chemistry involved - I suspect the coating must be a polymer based material that has long molecular strands so they can stretch. So classic enamel paint is not a good match. A coating with a more plastic attribute would work.
In a previous job we purchased all sorts of pre-coated/pre-painted/pre-plated steel and aluminum products. The raw material was pre-coated/pre-painted/pre-plated per the specs and we purchased all sorts of intricate shape parts. Don't know if this is what Airstream does or not but I seem to remember the factory tour guide indicating they used pre-coated panels for the end caps.
I'll be curious to hear what the factory has to say.
