Deep Pitting in Alclad 2024-t3

Getting all geared up to polish. The major issue I'll be facing is where steel reflector plates used to be installed. My goal was to remove the reflectors permanently and fill the mounting holes with rivets. However, upon removal I was disappointed to find heavily pitted and rusted metal, where electrolysis occurred.

Most likely I'll need to put new reflector plates on to cover up the damage. I located some that are made of aluminum and they are very inexpensive. I decided for now to clean things up and see what I have to work with. Using a self made Dremel buffing wheel from scotch brite pad, I slowly removed some material and it is cleaning up nicely.

Now I understand that it will never be perfect, but if I am able to remove enough material to get a fairly smooth surface - will the pitted areas polish to some degree of shine? How different does the polished surface look: Alclad next to Alclad removed?

Of the six reflector locations, the one pictured below is in the most serious shape.
