I saw this old question. Here is my take: I think the only way to get water spots out is to polish. That's what happens when the clear coat is gone. It likely should have been either recoated right away once it started to fail or polished (which is what I did). Of course once you commit to polishing, it never ends LOL. Of course you can just live with the spots and have fun camping anyway!
