The arms on mine are anodized light silver. My guess is that yours maybe also. If they are, the hazy coating you refer to may be years of grime or thermal stress cracking of the coating.
You can use products such as Zud, or Copper-Glo to clean anodized surfaces, but if it is a thermal issue you may not achieve your desired results. Anodizing can be physically or chemically removed, or if you're willing you could have the arms and such re-anodized.
