Avoid Mineral Spirits / Petroleum Products?

I've read that to use "Truck Box Polish" (directions at airstreamguy.com) that one has to first wipe an area with mineral spirits, polish, then wipe clean the "black" with mineral spirits, again. Since I'm sensitive to such vapors from mineral spirits and petroleum products in general, are there any effective polishes that avoid their use?

You can use Nuvite without the oil rub. However, there is some oil in the Nuvite, but I don't detect an odor, so it may not be mineral spirits. When you finish polishing, microfiber cloth will take off much of the remaining black.

Have you considered a resperator and nitrile gloves?

Good point Michelle. I've sensitized myself to a chemical in western red cedar. The effects are intensely uncomfortable if I heat the wood by fire, machining, or use a sauna with cedar. I can do anything if I use a paint spray respirator (check locally too -- easy to find -- make sure has organic vapor canisters). It seals effectively on a shaved face and I can't smell anything when I'm using solvent finishes. It's reasonably comfortable in summer weather too.

If none of the above suggestions work, maybe you might think about farming out these sorts of tasks....just a thought....

Considered briefly, but I'm generally a do-it-yourself if possible person. Still looking for that "green" alternative polish that hopefully isn't too labor intensive. Some Other Brand of trailer is still an option.

Avoid mineral spirts/petroleum products?

If I were to still consider vintage aluminum trailers that have anodized aluminum skins (Avion, Silver Streak) that I've heard do not require polishing, does anyone have any insights about maintaining these skins? Can it be so simple as simply washing them as needed?

But ....

They don't shine like a polished Airstream and old anodized aluminum does get duller. Wally's gold Airstream was anodized. BTW an Airstream that is oxidized is not in danger of "rusting" through. Aluminum oxide will eventually seal the aluminum from air. It will look crusty and dull but it is OK.

that applies to the owner 2 right?

as for green polish, how about those west coast guys that do the...

white wheat flower and lighter fluid thing?

those trailers look pretty shiny...

what's the deal with that technique anyway? herb have you tried that?

i'd REALLY suggest wearing a mask with that technique...

wheat flower in the lungs isn't a good thing.

cheers

Cornstarch for the black stuff

You may be able to avoid the last step of wiping after polishing by using cornstarch. Get a box of the stuff and wipe it on with a rag or towel, the black stuff will come right off. It does make a rather huge mess of black/white powder and you may want to do it in a neighbors yard, not your own driveway. I was introduced to this method several years ago when I decided to polish a large propeller. It was pretty easy to dispose of the mess by taxiing away...
