Anyone have thoughts on stripping an Argosy?

new to this site...I recently bought a 1976 24 Argosy that the previous owner primed gray 3 years ago. I know the end caps are steel, but has anyone got an opinion on if the aluminum may be stripped and polished, and simply paint the steel end caps silver to closely match?

i've seen this one up close and it looks like any other stream.

Jim.

Polishing an Argost trailer, properly, gives great results.

However, you can paint the front and rear cap, silver if you wish.

Be aware that those caps are galvanized plated, and must be treated as such when painting, or paint failure will occur in short order.

I don't know how to put a link here, but under the subject "What Airstream had a Rear Bedroom" , which is on the forums right now, scroll down to "Apache Camp"'s post & he has a stripped Argosy. You can't even tell it's not an Airstream.

just got a gal of stripper from a local aircraft maintenance company to try on the door. nice results for a quick test. there are sanding marks which will need blending to get to polish. will try larger area tomorrow. should those sand marks be sanded with progressively finer grit paper as any finishing job using a DA sander? and to what grit paper? you can see the dull areas are the sanded areas.

An Argosy IS an Airstream. Says so right on the label. Just painted. Wish people would stop saying Argosies are not Airstreams.

I think the terms are used simply to distinguish between painted and unpainted.... without prejudice to one being a lesser coach than the other. Using the term Argosy brings to mind a certain style of Airstream... just like saying an Overlander versus Bambi....

I sanded my endcaps starting with 320 and worked my way through the grits to 2000. I used aluminum oxide paper & wet sanded (this was to get a kind of orange peel effect off). Then I proceeded with the compounding process. You can pretty safely start with that. I used a palm sander & finished off by hand. Lots of work! Great results.

Or, If it's already primed spray the whole coach silver. KISS

You may want to check with some of the members that posted to this thread. There are some very nice looking rigs represented here.

How much paint depends on what kind of job do you want to do, and the amount of money you want to spend.

You can chose cheap material or very good material.

You can chose how many coats of paint you wish to apply, which dictates the life expectancy.

We, in our shop, use the following spray painting routine when painting an Argosy or Airstream.

We apply 2 double wet coats of Epoxy primer.

We then apply 3 double wet coats of a special mix silver.

Lastly, we apply 3 double wet coats of clear.

All tolled, you then have 8 double wet coats of paint.

The beginning of the job, is that the shell must be sanded (not scuffed) with 120 to 150 grit sandpaper. If anything less, the primer will not properly bond.

DO NOT under any circumstances, apply any form of acid to the shell.

How much a paint job costs, depends on who is going to do it, and the type and quality of the paint materials that would be used.

It also depends on what your willing to pay, for a paint job.

Keep in mind, a paint job, is like many things from Sears.

Good, better or best, quality of the work, the preparation, and the materials.

It's your choice, as always.
