Acid bath?
I had an RV repair professional suggest that we take our 69 Caravel to a truck stop that services the big aluminum style trucks (i think they often haul milk) and have an acid wash, prior to polishing. Something I'd never heard of...has anyone out there ever done or heard of this techinque? Is it readily available, or expensive??
thanks for any help on this, Krista

Good way to make sure it leaks all over the place. It will be like a big show inside during a rain storm. Lesson 1. Most RV places don't have a clue about Airstreams, especially vintage. Unfortunately in my experience this includes the local Airstream dealer.

Not a good Idea
I to have thought about this, years ago when I use to show horses and the aluminum horse trailers came out that is how they kept there trailers looking new. For our vintage Airstream's I personally don't think this is a good idea first of all all the lights, awnings, etc would have to be stripped. As mentioned above if it did leak just think what would happen. Just my 2 cents worth.

Thanks for all the feedback, that confirms my suspicions and I will ignore the advice, evn thought it was well-intended.
Krista
oh duh, I should have thought about the stainless steel being the metal for milk trucks!

No shortcut for a good strip and polish, but after using the Removall stripper I can say it is very easy if done according to directions. No real strenuous work involved in the strip part anyway.

Ditto. Multiple threads exist suggesting that milk trucks and Airstreams are two very different animals. Good decision!

I recently met a guy who told me about his Airstream hunting lodge in the woods. He remarked it was stainless steel....which made it very hot inside..

I know that you have enough info that you have made your decision. one more tidbit of info don't forget our rivets have a ruber washer under the head. Just a little FYI.

Yours may , mine dosen't. Do a search on Rivets the rubber gaskets are used in some repairs and are a no no they will leak. Andy form Inland speaks to this in several posts. Your are correct ACID would eat them up if you have any.
Thanks Jim
