YIKES! Did this come off my Airstream?
We are on our land in NC that we have been slowly developing over the years so that we have our one-camper campground. We have not been here for two years, but noone else has been here. When we pulled in from Fla, we got set up and had several friends over for dinner. One friend found this on the ground by the Airstream. It is well machined stainless and looks like it belongs somewhere- hopefully didn't come from our Airstream, but thought that with all the folks on the forum that have more experience in repair and parts, would see if it looks familiar to anyone. Anyone seen something like this? Did it come from our 2006 Classic Airstream somehow?

The first thing that came to mind was a cleco sheet holder.
It has a worn area. What do the ends look like?

I don't recognize it as a late model classic piece.

Wild Guess here - classic steps have some kind of hinge pin that can work it's way out or break.... Supposedly the piece is so expensive to replace that most folks say it's "inobtainium".
Worse would be if it were the door hinge pin.
I eagerly await the response of someone who isn't just speculating. Or of course you could call the mothership and ask if they recognize it.

You could send your pictures of it to the service center at Jackson center. Their phone number is 1-937-596-6111 if you do not have it. If they can tell you what it is, please let the rest of us know.

When I can get cell service I will give them a try.Hinges to stairs look intact and working, though anything behind the grey metal is not visible. I emailed the service department at the mothership to see if they recognize it. I cannot tell you how very thankful I am of this forum and folks like you...

Curious, did you ever find out what the part was?

No- I emailed parts dept at Airstream, but no response. Family emergency has had me pretty busy, so have not called them. When things settle down, I will call.....thanks for the follow up.

Is it possible you were NOT the only person on the property? That looks like an implement pin for farm equipment.

I think it is the pin for the break away safety switch. Does it have a small hole in one end for the cable that goes to the tow vehicle to pull the pin in the event of hitch failure?

That would be one heck of a break away pin.... It looks like a cotter pin fits on the smaller end of it. Could it be part of your towing gear?

Looks to be recent. No surface rust. Unless stainless. Is the little end curved like a standard buck rivet? If not , then I say the key to shut off the Death Stars tracker beam.

To me it looks like the shaft of a hitch coupler lock, with both ends missing. The small end would be where the keyed portion would slid on. The large end would have a knob or grip.

Carry it with you. Eventually you will discover what it is used for. Don't throw it out! Jim

It is stainless, no holes for cotter pins, toddler found it, so not up to practical joke age yet, will definitely hang on to it in case we find a mate looking for it's lost friend, and if nothing turns up, it has been a great conversation starter....other equipment that has been there was an Alaskan mill to cut our trees into lumber...maybe it is a part from that.....
