Wiring repair

This ground pulled-free from the crimp connector. I do not know which circuit it grounds. Anyway, here's a couple frames showing the fix.

I nudged it while underneath clearing away a black widow web. It came loose.

I used to see these crimp connectors on truck bodies supplied to DOT. The vendor was Godwin.

I bought this wire tool off the truck 20 years ago to scruff ground connections like on the AS. The polymer coating keeps the strands from fraying.

Trailer is new.

Hmmmm. I have seen that ground, but never checked it to see if was loose.
I will tomorrow.
Next time I am at Lowes I think I will look for the liquid tape. Good idea
Have a good one !

Wow thanks for all the pics. Never knew I had to have so many tools or it was so involved just to repair a ground wire.

It's my vocation. I reckon the Snap On guy has bought his own AS due to my patronage.

After this I found the jack circuit terminal with the same type ring. It, too, pulled loose with a tug. Same repair.

The reason I seal-up exterior connections like this is if left open, they inevitably corrode, resistance goes up, then the circuit opens usually at the worst time.

Good illustrated step by step repair.

We need to get more people to start using these superior self sealing, heat shrink connectors.
When we started using these in the shop 30 years ago I saw a video comparing the crimped/sealed connector against a soldered/taped one in a 2-foot length of wire. Shorting the wire to ground had the soldered connection failing in a few seconds. The crimped wire set had the wire burned through before the connector failed.
Now that they are available to the general public I can't think of any reason to use any other method of repair.

Tom

LG, nice repair and far superior to original install. Thanks for sharing the good ideas.

What part failed first on the soldered connector?

I appreciate it. You get underneath a salter dripping sodium chloride in freezing temps to discover one of those crap connectors and it makes an impression!
