Shorting the wire to ground had the soldered connection failing in a few seconds. The crimped wire set had the wire burned through before the connector failed.

What part failed first on the soldered connector?

I appreciate it. You get underneath a salter dripping sodium chloride in freezing temps to discover one of those crap connectors and it makes an impression!
