Wire spring inside water line from fresh tank

I am restoring a 1972 29' airstream - the hose coming out of the fresh water tank to the pump appears original. When I removed the hose, there was a spring inside. Is this to protect kink in hose, or serving some function to disrupt the water flow heading to the pump? Got me stumped...

Thanks
Frank

Very common thing to prevent the pump from collapsing the flex hose under heavy suction--like an almost-empty tank.

Many old cars had a spring inside their lower radiator hose for that same reason. My old '59 Chevrolet Biscayne had one because the lower hose was relatively soft and flexible.
