Who Wants To Finish My Project?

OK, child number three will be here before the year's out. That'll be three kids under five. Yikes!
What that confirms for me, though, is that I will NOT be finding time to complete the project on my 1956 Safari.
It was a nice-looking, complete trailer, until I really got into it. The floor was SHOT along the entire front, and the rear floor ....well, the trunk had no floor.

So, I've done a full shell-off floor replacement. With advice from this forum, of course. The shell's been fully sandblasted, reinforced and POR-15'd. The tongue and rear bumper have been painted. The floor's been fully insulated again. The floor itself was replaced (obviously) - all high quality materials...and epoxied on all edges and the whole topside. Shell's back on.

Anyway, the interior has NOT been replaced yet. I have about 90% of the interior - the only things I didn't keep were the few pieces that were totally shot, and I ditched the steel water tank and the electric water heater (that didn't work). So I have the working fridge, heater, stove/oven, and almost every piece of wooden interior. They're just not in the trailer

I have photos of the trailer before I started, and many from "during" the shell-off floor replacement. I will try to get some photos of the trailer currently (although it looks about the same on the outside as it did originally, and the interior is gutted, with a nice, new floor and lots of elevator bolt heads).

So if anyone wants a project that has already HAD the floor replaced the right way, let me know. Perfect for someone who wants to change the interior or refinish the old interior and replace. It wouldn't be too hard to use the old piece as templates, if you're a woodworker.

Anyone have some input here before I post it in the Classifieds? I'd sure like to sell to someone on the list rather than Ebay. In fact, it's the same model and year and layout of the trailer that just seld on Ebay - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1956-...spagenameZWDVW

just picture that one without the air conditioner.

Ah yes, and I have the ORIGINAL pole awning, and I think it even has a screen room. I've never even unfolded all the pieces.

Feel free to PM me with interest...or advice...!

Hmmm.
I think I have successfully put phoitos of the trailer here. This is what it looked like when I found it. It's empty now ;-)

Wow! So much to digest in one post!

First -- Congrats on the upcoming new addition to your family!

Second -- Sorry to see you give this project up. Will you be keeping the Avion trailer or are you getting away from trailering completely?

Third -- I would be interested in your interior, in the off chance the buyer of the Airstream doesn't want it.

wow! I guess you have been busy since we saw you last.

Congrats!

on the trailer: I was gonna say you should talk to Nancy; She'll probably want it. But she beat me to it!

hard to believe it was in such rough shape by looking at the pics of the interior. oh, what lurks beneath....

wish I could take it off your hands...but I don't even have time for the one I've got.
I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding a new home for it. Good luck!

Hi Chuck, Congrats on the addition to your family! Very nice start to the AS project. Quick questions: does it have black and gray tanks? I see the ebay camper didn't. Also, you POR-15'd the interior of the aluminum shell? I've never seen that recommended. What's the purpose?

Best wishes,

Steve

I think funchucky1's statement of por15 on the shell - was a typo I think he meant frame.

Ahhh, Sfixx.
Thanks for pointing out my mistake. The Frame was sandblasted, POR-15'd, etc. Not the shell.
There are no black or gray tanks. The trailer wasn't born with them. I suppose you could add 'em, but since we already have a trailer with tanks, my plan was that this one would be a "weekender", and we'd be using a campground potty or a porta-potty and a blue-boy for washwater. So I didn't add tanks. It could still be done, though.
The trailer (from the factory) just had the toilet pipe emerging through the floor of the trailer...and you'd dig a gopher hole for your ...effluent.

Nancy and Chuck - we are trying to catch up with all you guys, believe it or not. We still have the '62 Avion T-20 (and we have a '70 T-28, and also a '71 A-25, sort of). So we're not out of silver trailering. The Airstream just requires FAR more time than I forsee myself having in the near future.

Also - the Safari has been stored INSIDE since the shell's been replaced. And boy, that storage is expensive! I just can't justify paying for it forever.

Hey - here's the frame and old floor ----ewwwwwwwww!

I should also mention that the original Zolatone paint is pretty nice throughout. And the original light fixtures are intact. And the original roof vents.

Too bad you're on the other end of the country. I'd be all over this. I'd have to do it secretly because I'd be in hot water with the Mrs.

That sounds like a good name.

She's wanted an older and longer Airstream for years. I don't want any longer than what we have but I do like the older part. Longer means dual axles and a different tow vehicle.

Brad, what's a couple thousand miles?!
The Mrs would understand.
All you'd have to do is a super-quick polish job, then the outside will look so nice, she'll be calling her friends to check out the beautiful new trailer! In fact, I'm out on Long Island, and the trailer is in a giant garage. I think I have a Cyclo you can use while you vacation out here for a couple of days (if you call polishing vacationing), so the trailer can shine before you even get 'er home!

I like your idea, 65GT. My goal IS to thin the fleet...maybe I'll talk to Colin!

Nah, it doesn't have a torsion axle.
It has leaf springs (remember, it's a '56). Perhaps the older ones didn't have as smooth a ride as the newer ones (with torsion axles) but they also don't have the same wear issues.

Perfect, sound 13-panel trailer with brand new floor!

I'm going to try to get some photos tomorrow. But really, the exterior is unchanged from when I bought it, though the tongue is clean and nicely painted, as is the rear bumper (which, buy the way, had no rust)!

56 Safari Lives on...

Hi all, I just recently purchased the 56 Safari from Chuck, and as a matter of fact will be driving her up I-87 today to drop her off in Plattsburgh NY at GSM Vehicles. Winters coming and hopefully Colin and his gang can get her ready for some summer 07 camping!
Always plenty to do on vintage aluminum.
I'll keep you posted.
