What's this?

Mounted on the wall, forward of the door. About the size of a deck of cards. Not wired to anything. Takes two AA batteries that sound the horn when inserted. Bimetallic strip on the bottom does not seem to have any effect whether open or closed. Jack on the right side could take a mini plug.

My guess is a alarm to scare off intruders. The jack hole in the side may had had a plug attached to a cord. When you pull the cord it pulls out the plug setting off the alarm. Try plugging something in there to see if it turns off the siren.
Not all those who wonder are lost.
