what the heck is this??

We found a large crack in this when we turned the water on. It is connected to the water pump. The name on it is Peters & Russell and it appears to have a screen grid in the middle where the 2 pieces of plastic connect.
Any ideas, it appears to be a filter. Any replacement advice?
Thanks again to all of your Airstream gurus out there.

Haven't seen that paticular one, but it does look like a filter, and AS does put a filter between the tank and the pump. If small particles get stuck in the pump check valves, they will continue to cycle because they can't develop head pressure. You can replace it with any suitably sized filter.

Is it on the tank side of your pump? Mine was in my Argosy. Tells me it is to remove sediment coming out of the tank. Not sure if yours is OEM. I found a fair replacement at West Marine.

Normally we don't put RV antifreeze directly into the water tanks because it's nearly impossible to get out. But recall that these filters are all susceptible to freeze and cracking -- which is why I had to replace the one in my Argosy.

Airstream used thousands of those filters. It was standard equipment.

It's purpose was to remove large particles from the water prior to the water getting to the pump.

Had to be careful with it, since they could develop a hair line crack, which would make the pump suck air instead of water.

Check these inlet filters out...from West Marine Products...

West Marine: Pumpguard In-Line Filters Product Display

I have one of these in the line between the freshwater tank and the water pump...it's much heavier built than the old one you have on your AS. It's also easy to open the cover to clean, should it be necessary....
