The one bad battery could have an internal short, it doesn't mean the converter is the at fault..with 2 airstreams and 1 avion, I have never replaced the converters, my batteries lasted about 5 to 7 years, you just add a little distilled water to the batteries a couple times a year...

Ntex - the only truly sealed batteries are AGM's (absorbed glass mat), which generally sell for $300 to $400 each. The most likely underlying cause of the failure is the OEM charger/converter which is a single-stage one. The preferred solution is to upgrade to a multi-stage charger/converter. It is not a very costly venture; many have done it and there are numerous threads on which one to choose and how to swap it in in place of the single-stage one you currently have. More than likely what you are going to pay for replacing both batteries is greater than what you would pay for a new converter.

Well at least Lander is a fun little town! The pioneer museum north of town is a good time killer! People are very friendly. Several things to see and do!

Like others have said, do not assume it was the battery that caused the smell. Check all the LPG fitting that you can get to with a spray bottle filled with a soap solution. If leaking it will blow bubbles. Just start at the tanks spraying regulator and follow the copper tubing into the trailer. Piece of Mind is priceless.

Well, there may be a VERY simple answer to this situation.....

From your posting of 8-26, perchance was there a complete draining of the propane in one (or both) of the tanks? There is usually a collection of liquid(s) at the bottom of most tanks (teaspoons, maybe) that are usually undisturbed; they contain methyl mercaptan in a more concentrated state. When the propane (which is liquid) gets very near the bottom of the tank, the concentration of stink-um gets quite high, and the odor of the combustion gasses gets REALLY strong. If you smell that unexpectedly, simply change tanks.

Lemme know, please? I'm kinda surprised this hasn't been suggested before by someone else.....I've had five trailers, four of them Airstreams, in the last forty years, and it's been a characteristic of every single trailer when a tank runs out.

Just to throw another possible source of sulfur smell into the mix. The water heater can be a source.
The smell is created when natural sulfates found in some water mix with certain micro organisms (bacteria), they produce hydrogen Sulfide (H2S).

To my nose, propane smells nothing like sulfur.
