I have a real affection for my AS. I’ve named it “Nellie” after my first horse that I got when I was six and I deeply loved her. But. I view Nellie first and foremost as a tool to go camping with my wife. We started our marriage outdoors as I was a California State Park Ranger (Santa Barbara) and it’s stayed with us ever since.

I take good care of Nellie but I don’t have a melt down if something goes wrong. After all, she’s 29 years old and you kind of *expect* things to go wrong. Amazingly though she’s been very reliable in the seven years that we’ve had her.

But Nellie is not the goal. The goal is to be active, spend time together outside in our incredible state, and create memories. Nellie is the perfect vehicle to achieve that goal.

Yes, above all your RV should be a means, not an end. Same with your vehicle or antique -- if you spend more time under it than in it, what is the point?

Reminds me of much that has gone awry with NASA, too many engineers, not enough explorers (that and no money)

Reminds me of my sweet wife of 44 years and my 'march through technology' together:

We started out with a beat-up '63 Ford 'farmer' pickup (stepside, 4-speed granny, positrak, color: dust brown) and going places, including back in the brush, with an umbrella tent. All the gear in cardboard boxes, to keep the dust out of it. Camping in campgrounds: "Look, that guy has an AIRSTREAM! How cool is that!"

Moved up to an Apache tent trailer, pulled by a '66 Ranchero. Up off the ground! What luxury!

Sold those, had a '75 Datsun with a camper. We were dry and warm! What a great thing!

Got a well-used '75 Winnebago 19-foot crackerbox. Now we didn't have to unload when we got home! And it was Self-Contained! No more treks to the pit toilets in the middle of the night! We had sold the house, and were parked in the driveway watching the NBA playoffs on a luxurious 5-inch black and white screen. Score! Wait, was that OUR team?

Time and things intervened, and we wanted a travel trailer. 20 foot Aljo. My dad thought that those four wheels were the cat's meow - easier towing, no sway!

A few other travel trailers, some mistakes.

Then my wife became disabled, and felt trapped in the last trailer. I hunted for something more accessible, and now after all those years of admiring from a distance ... we have an Airstream!
