The Fire

Last Tuesday night we had a fire inside our Airstream 1970 International Land Yacth. It did a lot of damage in the front section. Has anyone replaced the inside skins and where can we get a kitchen window and a front dome?

Thanks for any and all help.

I, likewise, am trustful that not one person was injured as a result.
Sorry for your unit's losses..
As painful as it may be, could you share more details and, photos of the damages?
ciao

just curious

Thank goodness your OK. It sounds like a major fire at the entrance area.
Were you in the Airstream when it happened? Smoke detector? Fire extinguisher? I always preach to have an escape plan....... , particularly in a front fire. Can you ALL get out the back? If not, can you fight the fire with whats available so you can get to the door?

Sorry about the loss as well. I believe Inland RV may have the replacement domes. Not sure about the replacement glass. Look up Aircraft Spruce on the internet. They sale all kinds of aluminum sheeting and can ship it reasonably through UPS. I did some reskinning of my unit last winter. It is some work, but not overly difficult. Best of wishes.

I would be nice to see pic. As one who is in the same spot as you!!! Did you have Ins. How bad Is the smoke damage?? I would pull all fabrics out of the trailer right away. I will need both end caps and new window coverings end to end and more to come. Im up to 50+ loads of Landry and front inside skin for starters!!! I wish you luck!!!!!!!!!! If my baby was not polished I would just start over. Its a pain In the ass and a big hart ake to deal with I have yet to come to terms with it, as It was my home!!!!!!! I will think about you in my prayers, God bless!!!!!!!!!!! DIMMER

Cause of the fire.

My husband was disconnecting the big gas oven and he had shut off the gas, but there must have been some in the pipes and went he went out to get some paint "boom" something ignighted the gas! There also was some empty spray paint cans in the trailer on the sink. He had just finished redoing the inside of the trailer and started the polishing of the outside. We had not even taken it out yet. So now he wants to redo it a little differently. i am posting pictures.

I just posted some pictures. I got a little confused as where to post them, but the keywords are fire and 1970 Airstream.

Husband explained what happened

My husband wants me to explain it better. Gas wall oven was removed as it was not going to be repaired and we needed space. Disconnected with no problems shut off valve at oven was turned off and I was going to pull copper gas line down below countertop and cap line. Shut off gas at outside tanks and was preparing to remove shut off valve so I opened shut off valve and heard sight hiss figuring it was bleeding down, I walked outside. Two minutes later I turned to look at the trailer and saw fire from gas line. Nothing was on inside trailer other than overheads and task lighting over sink. I thought there was nothing that could ignight gas. Wrong! Believe the very hot 12 volt exposed task lighting bulb directly over bleeding down gas line was hot enough to ignight gas. I believe propane is lighter than air and will pocket up to exposed bulbs. Try touching your 12 volt light bulbs after extended run time, very hot. Suggest any gas work be done with no exposed lighting.

It's heavier than air, and thus displaces air. That's why propane detector is ... It's always located close to the floor, since propane is heavier than air.

WOW-so sorry but I am so happy that there were no human injuries. I hope the damage isn't too extensive, so much work!!One of the reasons I'm so skidish about gas.

More likely the ignition source is an electrical arc such as referigerator or water heater trying to light, or a pilot light which had not yet gone out. Bulb is likely not the culpret.
And yes, propane is heavier than air.
