It's heavier than air, and thus displaces air. That's why propane detector is ... It's always located close to the floor, since propane is heavier than air.

WOW-so sorry but I am so happy that there were no human injuries. I hope the damage isn't too extensive, so much work!!One of the reasons I'm so skidish about gas.

More likely the ignition source is an electrical arc such as referigerator or water heater trying to light, or a pilot light which had not yet gone out. Bulb is likely not the culpret.
And yes, propane is heavier than air.
