Tempro disaster - why?
Gaaaahhhh, I'm disgusted. Spent several hours hanging over the roof of the AS today cleaning out seams. Then I taped off a seam and put a bead of caulk down, lightly smoothed it with a putty knife. Two hours later I began to pull the tape and the putty had firmed up on the tape. So it was pulling the putty away. What a mess. Took another 45 minutes to clean it up. It now has to be done again. Where did I go wrong? Did I wait too long to remove the tape, was the 87 degree temp the problem. Or is there some trick to it? No pictures. I just didn't have the stomach for it. Thanks for any replies. Valarie

I'd pull the tape a lot sooner especially in the heat. The more liquid it is the less adhesion to the tape. Good luck.

I always pull the tape right after I've smoothed the caulk. Keep the garbage can handy!

If you pull the tape off immediately the edge will flow and flatten and the seam will be smooth with no noticeable edge. Even waiting 10 minutes too remove the tape will cause a little edge to form as the vulkem starts to cure the thickness of the tape and it catches crud over time. Use good quality name brand tape, not cheap stuff.

I think I remember this........yes, yes I do....the trick is WD40, wipe seams with rag wet down with WD40, makes Tempro flow out to smooth finish

Got it. Prep with WD40, use good tape, pull tape immediately. Thanks so much. Glad it was only one seam.

Prep with WD-40 and you will have an even bigger disaster!!!
You need the surface that is getting sealed to be absolutely free of any grease/oil or contaminates. WD-40 DOES NOT FIT THAT BILL!!!!!!!
Use mineral spirits or carb cleaner to clean and prep the area. Lay down your bead and then smooth with a gloved finger or mini trowel. Remove tape immediately!
DO NOT CONTAMINATE THE SEALANT WITH ANY OTHER PRODUCT.
If you're looking for the professional solution to your problem, you just got it. BTW, I use a case of SikaFlex 221 just about every week and use nothing but carb cleaner as a surface prep. No tape and nothing on top to smooth the product except a nitrile gloved finger. No leaks.......EVER in 16 years of professional use!!!!!!!

Lewster, Thanks for your professional input. I appreciate your experienced advice. I would love to be able to say "no leaks EVER".

You could use a vet syringe, load it with trempro and lay a nice bead along the seams. Although you might have to reload it and continue but at least you can control a syringe more than a caulking gun. And clean up is minimum.

I don't think this is the cause of the problem you described here, but keep in mind that some TremPro products have a shelf life. For TremPro 635 it's one year. I found this out the hard way when I used some TremPro 635 that was a couple of years old to install vista view windows and had to reinstall them.

Always pull the tape immediately. It is even more critical with Parbond. It skins very rapidly. I will pull it after completing every foot or so.

Put it in the freezer. Lasts much longer. I recently used some that had been in the freezer for over 2 years and it was still perfect in its flow behavior and cure.

I agree with Lew, that carb cleaner is great for prep....BUT, it can attack some paints, coatings and plastics if you are not very careful with it. There are two other products which won't harm paints nor attack plastics/rubber. BrakeClean and my favorite final prep chemical for many projects. PrepSol (or other paint prep brands). It is designed as the last wipe down before and between paint coats for cars etc. IMO, it is the best FINAL prep chemical, but doesn't clean a quantity of oxidation or dirt well.
My methodology is BrakeClean then a final wipe down with PrepSol.

Actually the age could be part of the issue. We've had the product for quite some time. I wasn't aware that it had a shelf life. Thanks.

There should be a date code stamped on the tube. I think it's on the metal part inside the bottom of the tube.
