Lightbulb stripe eliminator to remove old vulkem

Amazon.com: Motor Guard E-4000S Stripe Eliminator System: Home Improvement

Today we tackled the task of removing very old sealant that by its gray color, we are assuming its old hard vulkem.

To start off we used a razor blade to gently cut the bulk off of the window seams. Then went to a chain auto parts store and purchased the stripe remover in the above link.

It works like a giant eraser on a drill. It quickly removed all the old sealant and polished as it went.

Under the sealant we had oxidation that it did not affect.

We gave the areas a good scrub with a brass brush (Left no marks as we concentrated it on the window frames not the aluminum shell), 000 steel wool, again gentle but it takes a bit to remove some of the years old dirt, a toothbrush, & nylon dish brush.

This also will remove the blue & red stripes that run the length of the trailer easily.

Our next ideas for it include removing the hard yellowed tape residues from the door & screen door gaskets/foam after they are removed the gasket is removed (foam is already gone). If that goes well it should be a huge asset when we replace the window seals!!

Hope someone finds this helpful!!

Sounds like a good plan.

A lot of people talk about using just a brass wire wheel for removing the old residue from door and window gaskets. They use the term "burnish" when they use that wheel...
