Spare Tire carrier question

I am posting this again in the General Repair area in hopes of getting a few more people viewing it. Thanks for understanding......

I have a 1997 Excella. The original owners planned on keeping the trailer in Penn Woods and not towing, so they had the factory delete several standard items. One being the spare carrier. Now that I own it and want to tow, I need to install a carrier. The carrier assembly is readily available, but someone mentioned a plastic bin that goes above the carrier against the belly of the trailer. Is that correct for a 1997 34' Excella? Does the bin go over the surrounding belly skin? I am guessing I will have to cut out a section of the current skin to install the carrier. All input would be appreciated. Especially pictures and Airstream part number for the plastic part if it is indeed part of the install.

Thanks,

Craig

I know we've got several of that age sitting around, I'll go crawl under a couple and verify for you. AFAIK, there doesn't need to be a bin, but the belly pan skin does need to be cut out and attached against the bottom of the floor where the spare tire carrier goes. If I don't post a reply back by this time tomorrow, please shoot me a PM, as I'll have probably forgotten.

I had a 97 Safari and it did not come with a spare tire carrier, but I had the factory intstall one for me. No modifications had to be made, there was already sufficient space that allowed the tire carrier to be installed.

My current rig, a 98 Limited, has the same spare tire carrier installed. I suspect if you look under your rig, you will see that there is more room at that point than there is further astern - indicating that you have room to install your carrier. I think it was less than $200 for the installation.

Thank you both. I look forward to Terry's pics of how it is supposed to look. Andy told me there wasn't a plastic bin, and the guy at Colaws said there was one. Which of course is confusing for us newbies.

On my 77 I cut out the pan, between the Aframe, sealed the floor with a wall sealer used behind tile,
copied the mount from the 73 and it worked great. Can`t say for sure if it [the 73] had a bin or not.

I've got a few photos in a floor replacement thread...

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f36/...oor-54952.html
Specifically...
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f36/...tml#post738344

...that may show the aluminum panel. It sits on top of the frame rail. If I were retrofitting, I'd simply cut out the belly, rivit the edges to the frame and cover the exposed wood/insulation of the bottom of the floor with some scrap aluminum, using really short screws...

Here are a couple of pictures I took, all are pretty much the same, so I won't bore y'all with multiple pictures of the same thing:

Thanks guys. From the looks of the pictures and carrier it is just a matter of opening space in the belly skin, attaching it up near the floor, then mounting the carrier rack to the back of the "A" . Correct?

Absolutely correct.

Sometimes, an intended savings can lead to distorted ways to do things, or the way somone did something, and blames the factory.

Ah yes, what a simple job of installation it is.

You are so right. My in-laws were the original owners, and they paid extra $ to Airstream to delete the spare tire carrier, and rock guards for both the windows and lower front body. Guess what I am spending money on now......

For them it was a reasonable decision as this was the Penn Woods trailer and they had another at Travelers Rest for the Winter. After years of full timing and doing the Caravan tours, they wanted to be able to just drive between the two without towing any longer.

It could be worse, at least you can still get the rock guards and spare tire carrier from any Airstream dealer.

True. I have the window guards now thanks to ebay, and am watching for a pair of lower ones. The '97 has dual battery compartments, so I need the ones with cutouts for that. Colaws wanted the new retail price for a used tire carrier, so I will by a new one and get to work.
