Snow caused damage

I installed a 30X30X15 foot quonset type car garage that was suppoes to be heavy duty in september of 2010. I stored my 88 Excella and my 05 Lance truck camper in it. In the northeast between christmas and new years we had a blizzard that dumped over 2 feet of snow here in CT. The car garage folded like a cheap umbrella and collapsed. The Lance was about 2 feet taller than the Airstream so it held up most of the weight but the airstream AC is crushed a little and one of the tubes of the structure went through the skin just above the road side front window. The Lance had all its jacking legs bent and the AC is crushed. Cant see much of the roof areas till spring when the snow melts. Will be asking lots of questions here when I start repairing the excella. Things happen

Really sorry to hear that. I'm just hoping that no further damage happens - we're supposed to get more snow mid-week...

I spent the day shoveling snow off of my house's roof. Kinda tired of the snow; wish we'd get some melting before the next big storm.

Check your homeowners insurance. Some policies cover damage caused by snow collapse. Hope yours does.

Sorry to hear about your collapse. I certainly can understand how you feel. It was about this time last year we lost our 2004 Bounder MH to a massive storage shed collapse. Good luck!

Sorry to hear about the collapse and damage to your RV's. I started looking up information about snow loads and the results vary depending on the density of the snow, ice content, wind etc.. but it seems a cubic foot of water weighs approx 62lbs and the same cubic foot of snow weighs approx 10lbs. Even at that with your shelter measuring in at approx 900 sq ft thats a bunch of weight. Im glad nobody was hurt.

Your insurance company will be interested in the so-called heavy duty quonset hut, the specifications, the materials that came with it and what they say, and what representations were made by the seller. Two feet of wet snow is heavier than 10 lbs/sq. ft., but such snow is to be expected in Connecticut. It may not happen often, but it does happen periodically. I hope you informed the insurer of the quonset hut so it is covered on your homeowners' policy (and I hope you have homeowners' insurance). The insurance on the RV's may also have some coverage. If you have no insurance, you can make a claim against the vendor that sold you the quonset hut. Start reading whatever information came with the cover and go to the vendor and see what they claim about the products they sell.

Snow is to be expected. The cause of the collapse may be the cover's not so heavy duty construction.
