Small LED above water heater compartment

Okay folks,
I got one of those whatzit questions.....

On my 71 Overlander on the road side just forward and above the Water heater compartment, There is a small black piece of hard plastic that has two LED's on it.
The LEDS face forward.

I have never seen the LED's illumniate but they appear to be OEM equipment.

What is it?

Are you sure the are LED'S and not neon. 71 would seem early to have LED'S. BTW I have no clue what they are for.

Maybe

I concur about dateline for LED's but I cannot tell what they since they have never illuminted.

The plastic housing is riveted to the AS so Unless I want to drill it out, it will be hard to determine.

I am pretty certain that they are not Neon though.

I will post photos tommorrow.

The piece of hardware you are describing is a safety device. The two little red led's lite up when you hit your brakes as long as your brake lights work, or turn signals. (I think they are led). This system worked on my 74, but I do not remember one on my 77.

The closest comparision I have is in the 70's Caddy's had the same type of thing over the rear window so the driver could see if his taillights were working in the rear view mirror.

Lights

How ironic,
I just happen to be trying to figure out my brake controller problems,
I will verify this theory tonight.

Thanks for the tip,

I have two banks of two lights each on the roadside near the front rib. My brake lights work fine but I have never seen these light up. Maybe they are burned out.

they work by sending light down a fiber optic type of cable. if you take you tail lites apart you can see where the cable enters the housing. i also found this out when getting parts off a wrecked a/s.

and you can only see mine a night, but not while driving. it takes too long for your eyes to focus in the side view mirror. i did it once and ran off the road

I can confirm this; Mine work quite well, actually. I can see them just fine in the day time. I'm surprised they work so well after 30 years.....I was having some tail-light problems, and when I figured out what this thing was, I made sure to clean the lense that is in the back of the tail-light housing. maybe that helped. They were pretty grimey.....

Andy, if you read this: do your replacement tail lights have this feature, or at least a hole for this? or would I have to drill one myself if I replace the light housings? (mine are kind of corroded...could stand to be replaced).

The tail light system has a fiber optic system to drive the "tail light monitor."
They can drop out of the plastic probe that is in the tail light can. The probe is pushed into a grommet that been installed in the back of the can.
Our tail lights do not have the mounting hole for the grommet, but a simple drilled hole solves that problem.

The tail light monitor was first used in the early 70's. I know it was on the 73's.

Number of LEDs

Cubed,

How many LEDs do you have and how many locations?

I have two LEDs in one location as identified at the begiining of this thread.

I am wondering if this each LED is connected to each Brake light?

If one Brake light is out, does only one LED illuminate?

Sorry for the late response (I haven't been lurking lately!)

Anyway, I've got two lights as you do. One is for the right and one is for left. Check them at night and you should be able to see them nicely! Cheers!

I got them

1971 Tradewind - yellow lights, 2 each side. Brake light monitor, turn signal monitor. 2 in one housing on each side towards the rear. I can see them in bright daylight, as long as the sun doesnot directly hit them, like just before sunset.
