Shocking Discovery

Yesterday I was checking things under my AS prior to a trip and found that the nut was missing that holds the upper mount for one of my shocks. Don't know how long it has been missing. The shock was about one half of the way off of the mounting stud. Something else you should look at from time to time.

oh wow...I am mechanically not all that intelligent...but for "fun" may I ask:

What happens when a shock falls off?

The shocks are mounted horizontally, so it depends which stud it comes off of. If the front stud, the shock will drop and dig into the road while you drive and the damage it does to the trailer can be major. If the rear stud, it will drag along the ground, throwing up sparks; also not desirable.

This sounds like a job for Loctite Thread Locker™!

Use blue instead of red Loctite as you might need to replace the shock in the future.

New shocks would come with new nuts, though, so if you have to cut off the old ones, no harm done, as long as you've got the tools and the skill for it.

I used the nuts with the vinyl thread lock in them for that.

Also, just a little torch heat will release red loctite. And I don't mean red hot either.

Sometimes it takes a "nut cracker" to get the rusted nuts off. Yes, it does exsist and does not crack walnuts! You can get them at stores like Harbor Freight and maybe Sears. I worked on air cooled Volkswagens so I am quite familiar with them!

Squirrel, eyeballed him as he jumped from the overhead and dove in behind the commode for his escape
