Replacement A/C shroud
Hello,
I am trying to buy a replacement shroud for my 2004 safari. It has a Dometic duo-therm Penguin A/C. When I call around, they want a model number. My manual covers several model numbers so I don't know which one I have. I see shrouds for sale that just list as shroud for Penguin A/C. Are all shrouds the same for Penguin A/C's?

Why not call the factory ( Airstream). They will surely have the numbers for your year model.

If there are cracks in the shroud, will rain waiter leak into the trailer or will it get picked up in the pan and diverted out safely?

The base pan is sealed to your roof. No worries about rain leaking into the trailer (unless it has leaked before!).

I got a replacement for mine from Icon Direct. I believe one size fits all Penguins. BTW, the Icon is a very nice shroud. Much more UV resistant. I've had mine for 4 or 5 years.

IMHO.....stay away from Icon Direct in Canada, the customer service sux and if, after delivery your not satisfied they refuse to pay return shipping. After many phone calls they finally gave me a return auth #, they knew full well I wouldn't pay the $130 UPS or 125 USPS.
Some say they are great....but I wanted to paint and replace the Airstream decals, the plastic they use has no bonding properties, can't be painted and decals won't stay on.
BTW......it's for sale.

If you still need to find the model number of your AC, it should be somewhere under the inside cover. Although not a Penguin, mine was visible when I removed the access cover for the filter, above the filter on a tag stuck to the sheet metal.

Rule of thumb, If it can be sanded, it will hold paint.

I wonder if automotive "adhesion promoter", used for flexible bumper covers and the like, would work here.

Rich,
Yes... I believe thats what is meant by "extensive surface preparation."
One internet solution I researched was heating the area with a hair dryer to force the chemicals to the surface, but those chemicals are the very reason for it's flexibility and UV protection...counterproductive at best.

Hey... sounds like a perfect place to rivet on an Airstream aluminum plate!
