Unhappy Repair advice needed - trying to figure out best service options from Rochester, NY

Returning home from Alumapalooza7 we hit a sharp pothole on the road and the tire tread disintegrated creating damage to the wheel well, black water tank, drain handles, and covering. We need repairs but are trying to figure out the best place to get the work done! Looks like it will be covered by insurance.

We live in Rochester, NY and only have SOB dealers/service centers. We have used one of the service centers for brakes and they did a great job but this is will be more involved. There is an Airstream dealer in Tonowanda, NY but AS is a very small part of their business. When we visited there last year I asked if the service department was AS Certified (and they are) but not sure how much experience they really have.

Other reasonably close options include looking into Colonial Airstream in NJ or Can-Am in London, Ont. If we choose Canada then the insurance company has to transfer the account to the Canadian offices which adds another layer of hassle. Might there be another choice?

I'd like to hear about others experiences - pro and con - while we muddle through the decision making process.

Much appreciation,
Liz

Id be willing to bet your insurance might pay a portion of your expense to travel back to the factory if there is no repair facility close by.

A friend of mine had body work done on his box trailer in Tonawanda and was pleased with the work. Having said that I would probably take a trip to Jackson Center.

I would probably do to Jackson Center, but NOMAD in Plattsburgh, NY is an incredibly talented AS renovation center/rehab/customization center. Would be about 7 hours from Rochester.

Liz..........I've been using a mechanic that worked for the Airstream dealer in Ct before they closed their doors. He opened his own place in Holmes, NY after the Airstream dealership closed down. He has been working on my 2007 25' Safari for the past 10 years and I have 100% confidence in his work. He has done work for others on the Air Forums and you can probably pick up their comments with a search of the forum. The guys name George Hernandez, Classic RV Repair & restorations, 5 Sybil Court S-B, Holmes, NY 12531 (845) 319-6007. The place is located right off Rte 84, Exit 17. You can come down south on the NY State Thruway to Rte 84 going east and go over the Newburgh Bridge and stay on Rte 84 for 21 miles and get off at exit 17. You make a left under Rte 84 and Sybil Court in up the road a few hundred feet. I have no doubts that you will be pleased with his work.I was there yesterday and he now has 4 Airstreams (including mine) in work. Good luck

I truly appreciate all words of wisdom. Thank you. We will take everything into consideration.

I must say when we were at Jackson Center (just last week!) many people had less than positive things to say about the service they received. That's part of the reason we're looking at other options as well.

Liz I have been servicing my 87 Excella at JC since I acquired it in 2011. They are extremely capable, and I have had them do upgrades for me as well. I, too, had a blowout that damaged a wheel well, and their repair was well done.

You may also find it advantageous to schedule with JC so you can be there while the repair is done. They will move your AS to the terraport at 4:00 pm so you can sleep in it, and bring it back into the shop at 7:30 the following morning.
