Protection against uplift/overturning

Saw the images of the campground near Port Huron, where a bunch of trailers were flipped over... one even getting tossed in the nearby lake...

got me thinkin

how about (2) of these johnnies at the axles, and (2) more at the 'A' frame?

Sorry to spoil your thoughts but they are designed for small tents and even at that would not protect the tent at any wind above 25 or so mph. The forces nedded to hold down a trailer against the winds produced by a story like that that hit MI would require MUCH more than this, something on the order of buried logs or concrete anchors, and even that may not work.

You can always take off the tires and bury them if there's a storm coming and you're feeling industrious.

With the trailer hooked up, drive the TV so that it is facing the wind, should handle 75mph winds like on the interstate.

Housing standards range from 26 lbs/sf to 400 lbs/sq ft depending on wind speed from 80 to 250 mph.

Assuming we can apply to these numbers to a 25' x 8' trailer, that's a lot of uplift - 5200 to 80000 lbs.

Clearly, the latter would simply destroy the trailer and/or frame, regardless of hold downs - so no parking that Airstream in the path of an F5 .

Obviously, the lower load limit is handled by the trailer weight.... so hold downs would help, but not in all cases. You're going to find installing big enough hold downs to be useful a real PITA, esp. in loose soil.

Personally, I'd be more worried about a tree falling on my trailer than getting carried away by a tornado.

The pix I saw, showed the SOB's flipped over- but otherwise intact... I agree, our 'streams are going to fare better in a cross wind than our billboard shaped brethren.

Manufacturer's rating these at 2600lbs each... I'm sure soil type has much to do with that number.. but with we're looking at about 10,400lbs with (4).. that's the weight of my 'stream again in tie-down.

We need some lateral, rotational, uplift, etc.. calculations...
